Textile dyeing and its effects on the environment and human health have received little attention in comparison with the larger sustainable fashion movement. Through the use of Design Thinking and Systems Thinking, this project examines why that is, what keeps dyers from being more sustainable, how to raise awareness of textile dyeingâs impact on the environment and human health, and how to help dyers transition to more sustainable practices. The projectâs execution revealed that while there are many options for more sustainable dyeing, dyers are relatively uninformed about those options. And even when they are able to apply less damaging processes, it is difficult or impossible to measure the change because the impact assessment tools available donât include the specifics of dyes or dyeing in their data. These insights led to the decision to create a resource for dyers that gives them the tools to make better, more sustainably-minded decisions, advocate for improvements within their industry, and be included in the larger sustainable fashion movement.
